10. Ustad Sharafat Ali Khan Departs; Tue, 01 Dec 2009 to Fri, 04 Dec 2009As you may have heard, The Punjab government is planning to widen the road on both sides of the Lahore Canal, from Thokar Niaz Baig to Dharampura, as a so-called solution for the congestion on the canal road due to the rapidly increasing automobile population. The Punjab Chief Minister had announced that the project would begin immediately after Eid-ul-Azha, however, Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry took suo moto notice and effectively restrained the government from commencing work on the project on 27 November 2009. The government has not fulfilled its legal obligation of carrying out an EIA (Environmental Impact Assessment)for the project and the lack of transparency of the program is depriving the citizens of Lahore from having a say in this change.
It is the consensus of a great number of organizations and groups of concerned citizens that the Rs 3.15 billion project violates basic principles of traffic design and will not only prove ineffective in countering traffic congestion, but also lead to an outstanding number of problems related to the well-being of the public and the environment. Widened roads have historically proven to only end up attracting more traffic, and the government's focus on providing for the car-owning citizen over the abounding majority (which requires public transport, sidewalks, public toilets, phones and drinking water) is entirely against the principles of equity. The project also means the cutting down of several thousand old trees and losing over 50 acres of the green belt, which is sure to lead to a staggering number of environmental problems including rising temperatures and carbon and toxic content, not to mention the loss of ancient species of trees and shrubs that provide shelter to a variety of birds and small animals. The historical, environmental, recreational and aesthetic value of this green space cannot be stressed enough.
We demand that our voice be heard to address these critical issues and help preserve the beauty and grandeur of our city. Please sign the save Lahore canal petition. http://www.petitiononline.com/chitrkar/petition.html

13. Socrates cafe: Do we have a spirit; Mon, 02 Nov 2009Rabia Ezdi, an architect and teacher at National collage of arts, Lahore will share her research work on Mochi gate, walled city Lahore.
About presentation
Exploring the ‘system’ of inter-knitted activities and socio-economic networks in the Lahore Inner city: A case study of the Mochi Gate area
While both government and citizens generally acknowledge that the Lahore inner city is suffering from decay, interventions and upgrading approaches in the past have been unable to arrest the process of deterioration. One reason for this is that government approaches to solving the Walled City’s problems have been ‘fragmented’ and have lacked a holistic view of issues, local 'systems' and operating processes, and of the relationships of the area with the wider city.
Exploring the walled city as an economic hub and taking the Mochi Gate area as case study, the presentation discusses the local ‘system’ of inter-knitted activities and socio-economic networks which enable the Walled city to function as an essential pillar in the city economy.
This lecture will be the second of a monthly series of presentations, discussions and activity sessions about the Lahore city.

The forum is held on each Monday evening, the topic for discussion this week is "what is freedom"Freedom does not mean the denial of one’s impulses and instincts, but neither does it mean having to rely on them. Freedom is measured by the resistance that has to be overcome, and by the effort it takes, to make choices and be responsible for them. Nietzsche
"Freedom is my independence and the defining of my self from the inside, and freedom is my creative force, not the choice between the good and evil that I am faced with, but my creation of good and evil. The situation of choice itself can cause the feeling of oppression, indecisiveness, or even the feeling of absence of freedom. The liberation comes, when the choice is made, and I move along my creative path." Berdyaev

A vision to drive the new millennium
The history of philosophy, spanning over last 3000 years, grappled with the ultimate questions like: Does God exist? Is there a soul within our physical body? Why does evolution take place causing more and more complex beings? What are the basic principles of our social systems like economy, politics , religion and art?
Such perplexing questions as above have been addressed, hitherto, in three conflicting streams of philosophy called idealism, materialism and eastern mysticism. The third category includes mainly Budhism and Taoism; it treats the world as an ever changing flow or process.
So we have three worldviews - organic, mechanistic and process - which work as competing philosophical paradigms. In this situation, is philosophy a worthwhile enterprise? Addressing the present situation of crisis, Luke George has developed an innovative and unifying philosophy named here as System Philosophy.
The strength of System Philosophy is that it is based on Quantum Physics, Genetics and other evidences of modern science. Subatomic particles, atoms and other nonliving substances have elementary forms of life and mental behaviour. Every thing is a system , which is a combination of body and mind. Through original and convincing arguments, System Philosophy presents a comprehensive vision about reality, natural world and social systems.
The conflict between science and religion is resolved, through a theory of knowledge about systems. So we learn in a new light the concepts of matter, energy, space, time, Big Bang, cosmology, life, evolution, good and bad.

Lahore Walks
We are planning our next walk to Icchra on Sunday 8th February 2009.
Icchra was along with Mozang, Nawankot, Baghbanpura etc. one of the suburban villages of Lahore till the early twentieth century. It is conjectured by some to be the site of ancient Lahore itself and the name Lohari gate is considered a corruption of Lahori gate as this gate faced Ichra to the south of Lahore. It was the site of a major Hindu temple 'Bhairon Ka Asthan' and in in recent history home to the Khaksar leader Allama Mashriqi and Jamaat i-Islami leader Maulana Maudoodi. It is home to various specialized bazaars and dense old neighborhoods of Lahore.
Meeting Point Shama Cinema Crossing at Ferozepur Road. Time 9:30 am
Abdul Hameed Kachhawala, better known as Baba Mheeda, is one of the last remaining gavantris or bards of his kind. Now in his 70s, Baba Mheeda still sings with energy and vigor for up to three hours at a stretch. Strumming his king with the right hand and keeping rhythm with a khartal in the left, he has a massive repertoire of qissas, vars, hymns and humorous songs. Unlike most gavantaris who sing only the well-known passages from qissas, Baba Mheeda can sing Sassi, Veer Jodh, Sohna-Jaini, Poorn Bhagat to name a few, in their entirety. Belonging to Amritsar district, Baba Mheeda learnt the art from his father after migrating to Pakistan.55. Flute Recital ; Sat, 24 Jan 2009

61. Living Lahore, Call for entries; Fri, 15 Aug 2008Dhurpad recitation by Ustad Hafeez Khan Talwandi who presents a distinctive ideology of Dhurpad in which Islam entirely replaces the Hindu frame of reference adopted by most Dhurpad musicians (both Hindus and Muslims) in India. The distinguishing characteristic of Allap and Dhurpad is their spirituality (ruhaniyat), and the objective in singing them is zikr-e-ilahi, "Praising the name of God".
The Talwandi gharana as represented in Pakistan by Ustad Muhammad Hafiz Khan constitutes a distinct and important tradition of vocal art-music, with special emphasis on Allap and Dhurpad. The long years of learning, practice and performance have given Ustad Hafiz Khan a thorough command of the musical tradition handed down by his forefathers. Claims to the antiquity of Hafiz Khan's heritage is supported by the richness and internal logic of his body of knowledge and by his practical mastery.

65. Sarangi & Tabla Recital; Sat, 28 Jun 2008About workshop
Art education for children is accepted as a necessary component of educational ventures and for the promotion of art in society. In Pakistan facilities for fine arts, music and theater are virtually absent or minimal in the formal educational institutions, media and environment of Pakistani children. Art for children is not a privilege but a necessity to help them realize their native potential as creative human beings.
The average Pakistani child suffers not only from the lack of artistic exposure but also from a more destructive assault of alien and mostly meaningless cultural entertainment delivered by the electronic and print media. There is a dearth of good music especially composed for children and hence either Western music or popular music is the only choice available for children. In the first instance, the themes and characters are totally alien to the environment of the children and in case of the available local music the lyrics and content are irrelevant for the young child. At Chitrkar workshop painters, musicians and theater persons work with children to explore painting, music and theater that draw inspiration from our local environment and heritage. The workshop will be held on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday, 10am to 1pm.

Directed by: Irfan Malik
Produced by: Prerna Martin and John MathewMahesh Dattani's play "Dance Like a Man" is a story of the passing of an era in the lives of two dancers along with the issues of gender and changes in a world that is set according to its mplicit rules: Particularly, that of a man in a woman's world, of men who choose a profession that is discordant with conventional expectations, of fathers who wish to make the best of a disappointing situation, of daughters who are their mothers' deferred dreams and of women who will not stop at anything to realize their dreams.
